Registration for the symposium is now open

Progress in the study of non-covalent interactions and their influence on chemical processes has been particularly noticeable over the last two decades. It can be expected that achievements in 21st-century chemistry will be largely determined by non-covalent interactions. The symposium is intended to be a platform for regular meetings of researchers studying non-covalent interactions using different methods and with different goals, to exchange latest data, share experience and points of view.

Non-covalent interactions are widespread in nature and contribute to the strength (cohesion) of chemical systems. Compared to covalent bonds, intra- and intermolecular non-covalent interactions are generally weaker and characterized by much lower energy and directionality, which is reflected in the term ‘non-covalent'. The aim of the Symposium is to discuss various aspects of the manifestation of non-covalent interactions in both the solid state and the liquid state, experimental and theoretical methods for studying non-covalent interactions, their influence on the reactivity and catalytic transformations of chemical compounds, as well as the role of non-covalent interactions in the formation of supramolecular structures, in crystal design and in chemical synthesis of tectons for the construction of supramolecular systems.

The Symposium will be held in a traditional ‘offline' format. Online participation is only available for invited speakers from abroad. The Symposium program includes plenary lectures, keynote lectures, oral and poster presentations, as well as flash presentations.

The working languages are Russian and English. Abstracts should be submitted in English.

Workshop

Workshop at NCI-2026

"Elements of the p and d blocks as electrophiles"

Satellite IUPAC Workshop

Investigations on the interactions wherein elements of the p and d blocks of the Periodic Table function as the electrophilic sites are flourishing.

The IUPAC Projects entitled "Categorizing Chalcogen, Pnictogen, and Tetrel Bonds, and Other Interactions Involving Groups 14−16 Elements" and "Categorizing Interactions Involving Group 11 Elements" aim at identifying and conveniently classifying the interactional landscape of the elements of the respective Groups. The former Project already published the "IUPAC Definition of the Chalcogen Bond" (Pure Appl. Chem. 2019, 91, 1889−1892) and the "IUPAC Definition of the Pnictogen Bond" (Pure Appl. Chem. 2024, 96, 135−145).

The International Workshop entitled "Elements of the p and d blocks as electrophiles" is organized as a joint event of the two Projects and aims at involving some of the main players in the field and promote discussion and consensus on relevant topics. This IUPAC Workshop is a satellite event of the IV International Symposium "Noncovalent Interactions in Synthesis, Catalysis, and Crystal Engineering" (NCI-2026) (29th June — 3rd July 2026, St. Petersburg, Russian Federation).

It is a pleasure of the Chairs of the two IUPAC Projects and of the Committees of NCI-2026 to invite you to participate to this International Workshop. The scientific program of the International Workshop will comprise also the possibility to present posters and we hope you will decide to take advantage of this opportunity.

Participants wishing to have their oral communication or poster to NCI endorsed by the IUPAC Workshop are invited to formulate it explicitly when submitting their abstract and the logo of the IUPAC Worksop will be added to their abstract.

Prof. Giuseppe Resnati

Chairman of the IUPAC Workshop
